摘要

The numerous caves created by the river in the karst of Arcy-sur-Cure have served as shelter for prehistoric man throughout the millenia. In all Palaeolithic periods, he established his settlements under cave porches or areas which received daylight. On the contrary, the occupation at the back of the caves appears to be more selective. Even though, in the Mousterian, a few activity areas did exist in dark galleries, during the upper Palaeolithic, the latter seem to have been frequented with a symbolic aim in mind, as witnessed by the two sanctuaries of the grotte du Cheval and the Grande Grotte. We observe that the cave in itself played a direct rôle in the pictorial creation. Panels and ceilings, which are accessible and offer regular surfaces, had an influence on the formation and organisation of assemblages. Natural reliefs, which were perceived as significant, either were thus used, or were graphically underlined, hence becoming full figurations. Lastly, the walls' surface affected the choice of techniques. Moreover, prehistoric man took advantage of the natural elements available in the underground environment, using them as « makeshift » tools. At the Grande Grotte, evidence for « unexpected » human behaviour has been found m an ancient layer of more 28 000 years, which indicates that the deep interior of the caves had at some remote period explored.
