These last years, « high-definition » has been in rapid development in all multimedia domains (television, video gaming, etc.). However, in order to observers really enjoy this quality of experience improvement, the increase of the spatial resolution must come along with an increase of the display size. As a consequence, heavy and bulky cathode ray tube displays (CRT) have been progressively replaced by new flat-panel display technologies. Liquid crystal displays (LCD) are now leaders on the display market (TV sets and computer displays), but they are still suffering from visual artifacts, particularly when displaying moving pictures. In this PhD thesis, LCD motion-blur has been addressed. Its causes are both technological and perceptual. At first, this visual artifact has been characterized in metrologic way using measurement protocol based on the temporal step-response of the display pixels. Secondly, several psychophysics experimentations have been developed in order to model the LCD motion-blur perception and to characterize the annoyance experienced by the observers. From this psychovisual experiences, we have expressed some recommendations on the temporal characteristics of LC displays. Finally, a global motion-blur model, based on the perceptual characterization of this artifact, has been designed. It permits to predict the quality loss subjectively measured on LCD, and can be used to assess motion-blur reduction systems.
