A locator for a surgical port 40, the locator comprising: a seat (distal 18) for attachment to a robot arm; an interface 36 for coupling to the surgical port 40; a mechanism 34 linking the seat 18 and the interface 36, the mechanism 34 permitting linear relative motion of the seat 18 and the interface 36; and a controller 38 for controlling the position of the seat 18 relative to the interface 36 in dependence on the position of the robot arm; wherein the mechanism comprises one of a single member 34 permitting the linear relative motion and an articulated mechanism. The single member 34 may be an extensible member 34 wherein the extensible member 34 is one of an inflatable member or a coiled member.
