An active wing apparatus 100 for a vehicle comprises a wing 120 and two arms 112L, 112R reversibly lifting the wing from stowed (fig. 4a) to deployed (fig. 3). Each arm has a first end pivotably coupled to an anchor portion 101L, 101R, e.g. to attach to the boot lid 50L of the vehicle (figure 1), and a second end (123L, 123R; fig. 2) pivotably coupled to the wing, with rotation of the arms about the ends causing lifting of the wing. Each arm has a respective side arm 112AL, 112AR pivotably coupled at one end 112ALP, 112ARP to the arm and at the other end to the wing. When transitioning from stowed to deployed, the second ends of the arms 123 move perpendicular to the direction of lifting and the side arms rotate in a scissoring manner relative to the respective arm (see figures 4b to 4c). The wing may expand via telescopic portions 126, 127L, 12R. There may be shoot bolts (113L, fig 11) locking the apparatus to the vehicle. The apparatus may be driven by a single electric motor. Also claimed is a controller and a method of increasing traction of the vehicle using the assembly.
