A method and apparatus for controlling a permanent magnet synchronous motor are disclosed. The method for controlling a permanent magnet synchronous motor according to an embodiment receives the speed and torque commands of the rotor of the permanent magnet synchronous motor, and uses a look-up table for motor current values to correspond to the speed and torque commands of the rotor. Current values may be obtained, an error in the maximum output torque may be compensated using a maximum output torque table for each speed, and the dq-axis current values may be interpolated using the compensated maximum output torque.
