An OCT system for generating an anterior or posterior image of an eyeball is described. The system includes a light source, a controller, an optical system, a detector, and a processor. The light source generates light rays and can operate in a rear imaging mode or a front imaging mode. In the rear imaging mode, the light source outputs light having a spectral bandwidth less than or equal to the width of the 1060 nm water absorption window. In the front imaging mode, the light source outputs light having a spectral bandwidth wider than the width of the 1060 nm water absorption window. The controller allows switching between the rear imaging mode or the front imaging mode. The optical system scans light over a set of transverse positions of the eye. The detector measures the returned light and generates an output signal that the processor uses to generate an image.
