A method for screening a human individual for expression of an RNA associated with a complication following renal transplantation, the method comprising comparing expression of the RNA in a vesicle isolated from a subject's urine sample with expression of the RNA in a vesicle isolated from a urine sample of a donor without complications following renal transplantation, wherein the RNA associated with a complication following kidney transplantation is selected from the group consisting of AIF1, BTN3A3, CCL5, CD48, HAVCR1 and SLC6A6, wherein an increase in the expression of the individual's RNA compared to the expression of the donor's RNA indicates that the subject has a complication after renal transplantation when the increase exceeds a threshold, comparing the expression of the RNA in the vesicle that comes from the urine sample isolated, further comprising: (a) recovering the vesicle from the sample of the subject by passing the sample of the subject through a vesicle-retaining filter; (b) loading a lysis buffer onto the vesicle-retaining filter, thereby lysing the vesicle in order to release a vesicle-associated RNA, (c) quantifying the expression of the RNA associated with a complication following kidney transplantation in the vesicle-associated RNA by PCR.
