The invention relates to a method for detecting merging of the traffic lane of a vehicle with an adjacent lane, comprising the steps of determining the profiles of the boundary lines defining said traffic lane over a visibility distance (200), of extrapolating the profiles between the latter and a predetermined look-ahead distance (300), of verifying the convergence of said lines over said look-ahead distance (400), of storing the convergence distance (500), of updating said convergence distance (700) at the end of a predetermined period, of determining, at the same time as said updating step, a second convergence distance by reproducing said determination, extrapolation, verification and storage steps (800), and of validating upcoming merging if the difference between the updated convergence distance and the second convergence distance is less than or equal to a predetermined interval (1000).
