In order to achieve the energy efficiency class ie4 defined in the iec 60034 standard, it is necessary to operate permanently excited synchronous machines directly on the power grid. Because this is not readily possible, soft starter devices are questionable as cost effective solutions. The invention relates to a method by which the initial rotor angle is defined which can then be used by a codeless start process. The fundamental concept is based on energizing in a definite direction. This is achieved in which only two actuator phases are ignited. a spatial current vector is thereby applied to the machine in a fixed direction and the machine is then aligned to it. According to the invention, successful alignment and a locked motor can thus be recognized based on the stator current space vector profile.
