The invention relates to a method for assisting a driver of a motor vehicle (1) in forming a rescue lane (3), comprising the steps of: detecting a traffic jam situation (4) for the motor vehicle (1), determining the necessity of forming the escape lane (3) the congestion situation (4), and output of information (16) and / or semi-automated or fully automated control of the motor vehicle (1) in dependence on the determined need for the formation of the escape route (4). In order to determine situations in which the formation of a rescue lane (3) is necessary in a particularly unerring manner, a route condition is additionally recorded which characterizes a route (6) of the motor vehicle (1) and, when determining the necessity of forming the escape lane (3 ) is checked, whether the congestion situation (4) is due to the nature of the route and therefore there is no need for the formation of the escape route (3).
