Provided is a method for machining a material to be machined, by using a diamond tool equipped with a nano polycrystalline diamond or a vapor-phase synthesized monocrystal diamond, wherein: the nano polycrystalline diamond contains 10-1000 ppm of nitrogen atoms, whereas the vapor-phase synthesized monocrystal diamond contains 1-100 ppm of nitrogen atoms; during machining of the material to be machined, the temperature of the diamond tool is 400°C or less at the contact point between the material and the diamond tool; and a spatial region within 3 cm of the contact point has an oxygen concentration of 20% or less.
