The present invention relates to a method for producing a partially hydrolyzed lignocellulosic material including treating a lignocellulosic material with an acid and / or an alkaline and then a polyol. The present invention also relates to methods for producing a fermentable sugar or a fermentation product from said partially hydrolyzed lignocellulosic material. The present invention also relates to a partially hydrolyzed lignocellulosic material, a fermentable sugar and a fermentation product produced by such methods. The present invention also relates to an apparatus for producing a partially hydrolyzed lignocellulosic material, such as by the method mentioned above.
