The invention relates to a device for providing at least a first data signal and a second data signal, wherein the first data signal indicates an activity of at least one muscle of a patient relevant to an inspiratory breathing effort, and wherein the second data signal is an activity of at least one muscle of a patient relevant for an expiratory effort indexed, wherein the data signals are generated from EMG signals detected by Oberflächenmyographiesensoren. The apparatus further includes a computing unit configured to determine respiratory phase information based on a respiratory signal and to check at least one of the electromyography signals or at least one of the demultiplexed signals for detectability of a cardiac signal component and also to associate the signals with an inspiratory respiratory activity and an expiratory Respiratory activity of the patient as a function of the respiratory phase information.
