Method for the detection of radiation exposure of present in a sample chromosomes anomalies, comprising the steps of:(a) determining a position of at least one centromere each chromosome in a cell in an image of a meta phases core by:(i) segmenting an accurately reflect drawn chromosomes means line of each of the chromosomes in the cell,(ii) selecting a longitudinal cross section of a chromosomes image with a minimum width, intensity, or a combination of features, which are derived from width and intensity, wherein in a dicentric chromosome, the location of a first centromere is covered, in order to a following longitudinal cross-section with a second lowest minimum to identify a combined width;(b) determining the number of centromeric in each cell in each chromosome;(c) adding up a calculated frequency dicentric chromosomes in a cell population; andd) determining a radiation dose by comparing the calculated frequency dicentric chromosome to a previously determined dose - action curve from a calibrated ionizing radiation source.
