The present invention relates to Shewanella oneidensis, a microorganism, for synthesizing formic acid; and a method for synthesizing formic acid by using the same. In the present invention, Shewanella oneidensis was first used for synthesizing formic acid from CO_2 and electrons generated from an electrode; CO_2 reduction catalyzed by Shewanella oneidensis aerobically grown in an LB medium can generate 14.1 mM formic acid after a 24 hour reaction; and particularly, CO_2 reduction catalyzed by Shewanella oneidensis grown in a medium containing fumarate and nitrate under an anaerobic condition can generate formic acid up to 136.84 mM after a 72 hour reaction. Additionally, the average reaction rate for formic acid synthesis in a 72 hour reaction catalyzed by Shewanella oneidensis grown anaerobically in an optimal medium was 3.8 mMh^(-1)g^(-1) wet cell. This value is 9.6 times greater than that obtained from the reaction catalyzed by Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 in a previous study, and thus Shewanella oneidensis can be expected to be beneficially used as a microorganism capable of synthesizing formic acid from CO_2.
