The objective of the present invention is to provide a novel resin which is able to be an alternative to a diallyl phthalate resin, and which is capable of improving the elastic modulus and the gloss of a coating film of an active energy ray-curable printing ink in cases where the resin is used as a binder for the printing ink. The present invention relates to a modified phenolic resin (1) which is a reaction product of (A) a phenolic resin, (B) a polyvalent carboxylic acid cyclic anhydride and (C) a glycidyl compound containing (c1) an aromatic glycidyl compound.
