The invention relates to medicine, and more particularly to neurosurgery and neuroradiology. The technical result is an increase in the accuracy with which the histological type of neoplasms is identified on the basis of MRI scans in the preoperative period. This technical result is achieved by means of a method of preoperatively determining the degree of malignancy and the histological type of meningiomas which involves the analysis of contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MRI scans, including the steps in which: the intensity of each pixel in the tumour region on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MRI scans is determined; the intensity of each pixel on intact white matter tissue of the patient is normalized taking into account the coefficient of deviation of a histogram from the average background colour in a database of MRI scans of meningioma patients; a histogram of the normalized intensity of the pixels on the MRI scans is generated; the position of the peak of the histogram is determined and, on the basis of a comparison of the value thereof with the threshold values of different histological types of meningiomas contained in the database, the histological type of the tumour and the corresponding degree of malignancy thereof are determined.
