A procedure performed during cold ischemia to prevent or reduce the formation of intercellular spaces in a lung cell in extracorporeal tissues or organs or in tissues or organs that are being transplanted from a donor tissue or organ to a transplant recipient, in the that said tissues or organs are not located in a living organism, the method comprising contacting the cell, tissue or organ during cold ischemia with an effective amount of a compound represented by the formula (I): ** Formula ** where: n is an integer from 1 to 6; X1 is O or S; X2 is O or S; R1, R2 and R3 are independently C2-C16 acyl, where at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is C2-C7 acyl; R4 is selected from the group consisting of H, hydroxylalkyl, -C ( = O) NH2 and - (CH2) mC ( = O) OH, where m is an integer from 0 to 2; and R5, R6, and R7 are independently C10-C12 alkyl, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
