A method based on gradient estimation using perturbation sequence that brings in adaptability to an analog beamforming system and by use of which, beam can be steered to the direction of the desired signal while nullifying the interferers without any a priori knowledge of the signal directions is described. It involves processing the microwave beamformer output with the help of a training sequence. Since the adaptive technique requires processing of only the beamformer output signal, there is no need to monitor the received signal at each antenna array element. Further, use of variable phase shifters, attenuators and modified LMS method to find optimum weighting coefficients, for efficient beamforming, reduces the hardware complexity. This method makes successive corrections to the weight vector in the negative direction of the gradient vector, which finally concludes to minimum mean square error (MSE), at which the weight vector assumes its optimum value.
