The invention relates to aqueous multistage polymer dispersions that can be obtained by radically initiated aqueous emulsion polymerization, having a soft and a hard phase, and a stage ratio of hard to soft from 25 to 95 wt % to 75 to 5 wt %, wherein the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the soft phase is -30 to 0 °C as a first stage and that of the hard phase is 20 to 60 °C as a second stage, comprising at least one monomer of the general formula I, where the variables have the following meanings: n = 0 to 2, R1, R2, R3 = hydrogen or methyl groups, independent of each other, X= O or NH, Y = H, alkali metal, NH4. The invention further relates to a method for producing said aqueous polymer dispersions and to the use thereof as binding agents in coatings, and to coatings comprising the polymer dispersions according to the invention.
