The method involves storing information about a street height profile (P1) used for detecting a road ahead level profile (P) for a vehicle-traveled lane, in a pair of storage unit (3,4). A lane assignment of the vehicle is carried out by a coarse localization and a fine localization of the vehicle. The coarse localization is carried out based on the position data and/or the detected image data.The fine localization is carried out with reference to a corresponding search. Theroad ahead level profile is detected for determining a road surface quality.
