The method involves recognizing an electrical energy consumption of the three-phase alternating current power supply (2) of the machine tool (1) in terms of energy consumption amounts continuously or only at defined times. The electrical energy cost of the energy consumption values at the beginning and end of the specific period is determined from current electricity price. The power consumption values are provided to a software module of the machine tool controller. The current and voltage of power supply are measured, and the corresponding energy consumption value is determined. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program product for determining electrical energy cost of machine tool during processing of workpiece; and (2) a machine tool.
