The method involves recording a spatially resolved digital image of the individual identification section comprising the value document. A pixel region of the image is calculated for the individual identification of pixels as a foreground pixel according to a preset criterion. Amounts of foreground pixels are searched. One of the sets that are found previously as assigned foreground pixels is searched. Adjacent foreground pixels which are not yet assigned are searched. The patterns formed by the pixels of amounts found with reference patterns for predefined characters are compared. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) device for detection of individual identifiers; (2) computer program for detection of individual identifiers; and (3) data carrier.
