Synthetic surface capable of supporting the cultivation of eukaryotic cells, including stem cells and undifferentiated human embryonic stem cells in chemically defined medium comprises a swellable (meth) acrylate layer and the polypeptide bound to the swellable (meth) acrylate . The swellable (meth) acrylate layer, the carboxyl group-containing (meth) acrylate monomer, a crosslinkable (two or higher-functional) (meth) acrylate monomers, and carboxyl group-containing (meth) acrylate monomer and the crosslinking ( it may be formed by monomer polymerization in a composition comprising a hydrophilic monomer capable of polymerizing with meth) acrylate monomers. Swellable (meth) acrylate layer has an equilibrium moisture content in water of between about 5% and about 70%. Binding peptide will comprise an RGD amino acid sequence.
