PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate the rotor position accurately without being affected by errors of a current detector for detecting a current flowing to a motor, in a rotor position estimation apparatus for estimating the rotor position of a motor including a rotor having a salient pole.SOLUTION: A rotor position estimation unit 270 estimates the rotor position of an AC motor M1, including a rotor having a salient pole, during stoppage. The rotor position estimation unit 270 applies a d-axis voltage to the AC motor M1 during stoppage thereof, and detects a q-axis current flowing to the AC motor M1 when the d-axis voltage is applied. Based on the q-axis current thus detected, the rotor position of an AC motor M1 during stoppage is estimated. The rotor position estimation unit 270 sets a d-axis voltage application time corresponding to a moment in time when the q-axis current has a peak, in the transient response characteristics of the q-axis current when the d-axis voltage is applied.
