Agent comprises porous inorganic and/or organic materials, sulfur and binder for fixing sulfur on the inorganic and/or organic substances. An independent claim is included for use of the agent for the removal of volatile heavy metals, preferably mercury, where the removal of volatile heavy metals comprises introducing the agent into the gas stream to be purified and mixing, reacting the obtained mixture with the pollutants and depositing the pollutants on fabric filters and/or electrostatic precipitators.
