PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform estimation of magnetic pole position and determination of polarity simultaneously in parallel, and to detect the magnetic pole position in a short time.SOLUTION: An initial magnetic pole position ^ is detected by estimating the nonpolar magnetic pole position ^± and the polarity simultaneously in parallel, from the current circuit model of a synchronous motor called an adaptive model, and the difference between current estimation values id^, iq^ estimated by the adaptive model and currents i, i flowing to the actual synchronous motor. A current average section 21 obtains an average value i of the current detection value i on the -axis, i.e., the estimated magnetic pole axis, and the magnetic pole is determined based on the average value i from the current average section 21.
