The method involves acquiring an image of a surface of a sample of material, and establishing a mapping of inclusions (121) appearing in the image. Clusters (16-18) of inclusions are identified from the mapping of inclusions. Minimum distance (di) between two inclusions is determined. Formation of one of the clusters by combination of the two inclusions is confirmed when a predetermined criterion is satisfied, where the criterion is a function of the minimum distance and depends on X-ray analysis of the material. An independent claim is also included for a device for characterization of inclusions of a material.
