The method involves determining (a) instantaneous speed of vehicle and associated level position of vehicle wheel while driving over the road to be classified. A road-wheel lift profile is calculated (b) from the instantaneous speed and position of the corresponding level. The spectral density of the wheel lift profile is computed (c). The modified density spectrum is determined (d) from the predetermined frequency ranges based on computed spectral density. The surface profile of road is classified (e) by comparing modified density spectrum with reference spectrum. An independent claim is included for device for classification of surface profile of roadway.
