The method involves forming delay coefficient sets by time delay coefficients used for forming directional characteristics of converter groups. The sets are provided for reception of sound waves from a direction. Measuring profiles of each converter group are iteratively computed based on values determined from group signals by receiving values for a sound velocity to be determined. The measuring profiles are compared for each received value of the sound velocity to be determined. A value for the sound velocity is determined based on comparison results. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining sound velocity in a region of an acoustic receiver attached at a water vehicle.
