The safety unit has a protection device (2), which is automatically activated during detected impact of the person (5). A foam-like damping unit (6) emerging and unfolding from the protection device covers an outer side of the vehicle (1) in a sectional manner. The protection device is automatically activated during a detected collision of the vehicle with a barrier. The protection device is arranged under the car body shell of the vehicle.
