PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery that achieves a high capacity and good cycle characteristics.SOLUTION: A nano-size particle includes an element A-1 and an element A-2 which are two elements selected from the group consisting of Si, Sn, Al, Pb, Sb, Bi, Ge, In, and Zn, and an element D which is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Fe, Co, Ni, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Ba, lanthanoid elements (except for Ce and Pm), Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, and Ir, and has a first phase which is an elemental substance or a solid solution of the element A-1, a second phase which is an elemental substance or a solid solution of the element A-2, and a third phase which is a compound of the element A-1 and the element D. The negative electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery includes the nano-size particle as a negative electrode active material.
