The method involves a reference-cruising range of a motor vehicle (1), and determining a reference-target state of charge of an electrochemical cell (2). A momentary state of charge of the cell is determined, and an expected target state of charge of the cell is determined from the current state of charge and the reference-cruising range of the motor vehicle. The current state of charge of the cell is increased when the expected state of charge is smaller than the reference-target state of charge, such that the expected state of charge is equal to the reference state of charge. An independent claim is also included for a charging device for an electrochemical cell of a motor vehicle.
