The method involves determining an extension factor of graphical symbols, and rotating the graphical symbols around 90 degree. A minimum extension factor and a maximum extension factor of the rotated graphical symbols are determined. A value representing addition of minimum and maximum extension factors is determined. A rotation angle is determined for determining rotation with respect to minimum extension factor, where extension and rotation of the graphical symbols take place on a pattern field (10) that consists of a rectangular surface (11) and quadratic pattern fields (12). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for performing a method for detecting graphical symbols (2) a computer program product for a device for performing a method for detecting graphical symbols (3) a computer readable data structure comprising instructions to perform a method for detecting graphical symbols (4) a computer readable data medium comprising instructions to perform a method for detecting graphical symbols.
