The method involves pumping a water body in a cycle into an open or closed reactor, in order to achieve a homogeneous distribution of material in the water body. The reactor is filled with a water-saturated porous medium in a lower part and with the water body in an upper part. Pressure differences acting in a natural surface water on the porous medium is adjusted. A concentration difference of the material between the water body and the porous medium is adjusted. A material concentration in the water body is determined as a function of time. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining rate of material exchange between a water body and a porous media in surface water.
