Device (10) comprises a container (12) for receiving water (13) to be softened, in which many agglomerate-free nano-composites (14) are present. The individual nano-composite is designed with a surface, which is equipped by an ion-binding effect to bind water hardness forming ions (18). Independent claims are also included for: (1) the agglomerate-free nano-composites; and (2) softening of water, comprising bringing together the water to be softened and the agglomerate-free nano-composites, and allowing the binding of hardness forming ions from water to the nano-composites.
