A compression staple (261) for fastening a first bone segment to a second bone segment, comprising said staple of a resilient material and having a generally U-shaped and comprising: a) first and second separate pin that extending longitudinally (263, 265) with sharp free ends and proximal ends; b) a bridge portion (267) interconnecting the proximal ends of said legs; and wherein said legs have a convergent orientation with respect to each other, and said legs are adapted to be clamped resiliently in a parallel orientation wherein said legs are forced into their initial convergent orientation with a predetermined force, characterized in that said pins (263, 265) are wider than said bridge portion (267) and said bridge portion lies to one side of the parts of opposite inner surfaces (270, 274) of said pins.
