The suspensory apparatus of the coffin bone with particular regard to its fan-shaped reinforcement at the tip of the coffin bone was examined for the first time. The aim of the study was to reveal structural and functional peculiarities within the different areas of this suspension device. The collected specimens from 11 Warmblooded horses of median height with healthy hooves were investigated using serial plastinated sections and immunohistochemistry of histological sections for detection of alpha -smooth-muscle actin. Results revealed that the fan-shaped reinforcement could be subdivided into three different parts. The upper part of the fan-formation emerged continually from the main part of the suspensory apparatus and was characterized by a gradual flattening of the direction of the trajectories of its supportive elements. The middle part with its horizontal direction was characterized by the loss of the dermal and epidermal secondary lamellae, and thus, by loss of the dermoepidermal interlamellary bond as well as the stick-slip effect. The lower part displayed an increasingly gradient direction of the dermal trajectories that were anchored within the horn of the white line. alpha -smooth-muscle-immunoreactive fibroblasts within the dermal trajectories were detected that presumably enable a self-equilibrating stress of the distal part of the fan-shaped re-enforcement of the suspensory apparatus of the coffin bone. The discussion reveals that the supportive function of the main part of the suspensory apparatus of the coffin bone within the fan-shaped reinforcement was distally superseded by another function such as indirectly anchoring the deep digital flexor tendon within the horn of the white line. This acts as a bracing device for the linea alba, as displayed by the stretched course of the radially directed cross sections of the cornified lamellae. This bracing effect was lost in the palmar and plantar aspect of the hoof because the tension of the deep digital flexor tendon here was not effective, as displayed by the undulated direction of the cross sections of the cornified lamellae of the white line within quarter and heels of the hoof. The clinical-functional application of the fan-shaped reinforcement of the suspensory apparatus of the coffin bone is considered in part 2 of this study.
