The device (D) has an emission unit (ME) to emit ultrasonic waves (OE) resulting from a modulation of an ultrasonic carrier (PU) with audio signals (SA), in a chosen area of a passenger compartment. A measurement unit (MM) estimates distance separating a chosen part of a passenger from the emission unit. A control unit (MC) compares the distance with a chosen threshold to determine an action, relative to emission of the waves and to protect the passenger from harmful effects of the waves, based on the comparison result, and acts on the emission unit to apply the action on the emission unit.
