A description is given of a method for the characterization of material in a plated ferromagnetic material specimen by means of a nondestructive ultrasonic transducer technique, in which ultrasonic waves are excited within the material specimen by way of magnetostrictive ultrasonic wave excitation, received by means of a reciprocally acting magnetostrictive transducer technique and evaluated. The invention is distinguished by the fact that a magnetic field oriented parallel to the surface of the material specimen is introduced into the material specimen with a variable magnetic field strength and is superimposed on an RF field, that ultrasonic waves in the form of linearly polarized transversal waves form within the material specimen with a direction of propagation oriented perpendicularly to the surface of the workpiece, and that the magnetic field acting on the material specimen is picked up by sensors, and that, within at least a predeterminable time window, receiving signals that can be assigned to the ultrasonic waves received are recorded and taken as a basis for the evaluation while taking the variable magnetic field strength into consideration.
