PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for measuring a critical stress intensity factor of a fiber, which makes the number of samples small by forming a size-controllable defect in the fiber, and can obtain the critical stress intensity factor of the fiber with high precision by enabling the size of the defect to be defined clearly.;SOLUTION: The method for measuring the critical stress intensity factor of the fiber is characterized in that a surface of the fiber is irradiated with a laser beam, thereby forming a hemispheric defect whose size is 1%-50% of the diameter of the fiber, and the fiber is broken at the portion having the hemispheric defect by carrying out a tension test, and the critical stress intensity factor is obtained from the size of the hemispheric defect and the breaking strength of the fiber, by using following equation: KIC=σ√(πc), wherein KICis the critical stress intensity factor, and σ is the breaking strength, and c is the size of the hemispheric defect, and π is circular constant.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
