An optical disc (1) is driven by a spindle motor (5) and information is obtained from the disc by an optical head on a carriage (2) moved to specific positions. The optical head unit has an actuator to adjust focal position and an actuator to provide tracking control. Both servo actuators receive drive signals from a controller (30). The signal reflected back from the disc surface contains feedback control data relating to the focal and tracking errors. Differences in actual servo characteristics are determined based upon the measured values and a compensation is applied. A range of compensation values are stored in an EEPROM (25) and are accessed by the address based upon the difference.
