The method involves detecting steering movement of a steering handle (1) using a moment sensor (4) and an angle sensor (3), and modeling the free steering movement of the handle under observation of non-linear friction-effects based on experimental measurement data. The driver steering moment is determined as a condition using a condition observer (8) and is evaluated using the observer. The contact condition between the hands of a driver and the steering handle is detected by a hand-off detector (9) using the evaluated steering moment.
