The injector (5) has a valve element (17) effectively connected with a control chamber with variable control pressure. The control chamber is adjustable between an opening position freeing a fuel flow from a nozzle chamber (16) and a closing position. A control valve (33) is provided for varying the control pressure, and connects the control chamber hydraulically with a low-pressure area (9) and a fuel tank (36). A diameter stage (40) of the valve element is attached with the fuel tank that is connected with the nozzle chamber via a throttle channel (43).
