A method for reducing effects in industrial process waters of an extracellular enzyme produced by a collection of microorganisms attached to a surface in an industrial water environment, the method characterized by: causing a substance which is formed by the reaction of an oxidant and an amine source and which is capable of interfering with the production of an extracellular enzyme by a collection of microorganisms attached to a surface in an industrial water environment to contact a collection of microorganisms attached to a surface in an industrial water environment by intermittently feeding the substance in to the industrial water environment. During each feeding of intermittently feeding the substance is fed for a duration and at a concentration which is sufficient to substantially eliminate the production of the enzyme by the collection of the microorganism until the next feed in the intermittently feeding, but which is insufficient to inactivate the enzyme.
