A method of monitoring for the presence of micro-organisms at a plurality of locations in an establishment comprising measuring the quantity of micro-organisms at each location using a measuring apparatus, transferring information from the apparatus to a common data receiving apparatus and using said data to provide information about the quantity of micro-organisms at each location. The apparatus may have a reagent which is specific for MRSA present on the culture medium. Alternatively claimed in an apparatus for measuring micro-organisms having a housing with means to support a micro-organism test member with a culture medium, a source of suction to draw into said housing outside air over the culture medium, a reagent applying device to apply a reagent to said medium, a light intensity measuring device to detect the presence of any micro-organism once the reagent has been applied and means to convert the light intensity into a digital signal to indicate the quantity of micro-organisms. Also claimed is a micro-organism test member having a base portion made from a flexible material with a recess to receive a culture medium.
