The method involves producing photo-voltages in photo-receivers that are arranged opposite to radiation emitters, where the photo-voltages correspond to meniscus (14) formed at the edges of a standpipe or bypass based on a surface voltage at a surface of fluid (12). The surface voltage of the fluid is computed from the temporal characteristics of the photo-voltages by using an on-board computer, where the temporal characteristics correspond to temporal characteristics of the height of the area of total reflectance of the meniscus. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for determination of a surface voltage fluctuation and/or surface voltage of fluid.
