The method involves producing sensor signals, which correlate with a distance of a motor vehicle (1) to a driveway limitation, by distance sensors (8a, 8b, 9a, 9b). A set of time and/or location dependent distance values are determined from the signals, and the values are stored. The stored distance values are statistically evaluated, and sensor condition signals, which correlate with the result of the evaluation, are produced. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a distance measuring device for a vehicle for measuring a distance of the vehicle from a driveway limitation (2) a parking assistance system of a vehicle for outputting parking indications.
