The powertrain has four shafts one of which serves as mounting portion for the engine (10), generator (110) and the motor (112). A planetary gear set is mounted between the generator and the motor. A shaft driven gear (120,130) is mounted to each of the second and third shafts with the secondary shaft receiving power from the planetary gear set (PG). A differential ring gear connected to the third shaft is mounted to the fourth shaft so as to receive power from the third shaft drive gear and a differential apparatus (142).
