In a process to convert a continuously-operated steel strip smooth-surface etching trough into a turbulent-surface etching process trough, an intermediate cover (12) of polypropylene or granite slabs is placed over the vat inlet and outlet zones, just above the surface. The slab cover (12) supports a further cover of acid-resistant material (13) extending along the trough and bearing sliding pads (7). The inlet and outlet zones are defined by partition walls. Further claimed is a commensurate continuously operated steel strip turbulent etching trough.
